SHANGHAI Mayor Ying Yong met David Gonski, chairman of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ), last Friday.

Ying said Sino-Australian cooperation in economy, trade, tourism and other fields developed fast after the two countries established diplomatic relationship in 1973 and upgraded it into comprehensive strategic partnership in 2014.

He said Shanghai, being China's economic center, is following the central government's plan to build itself into an international financial center that matches China's economic status. To achieve the goal in 2020, Shanghai is pushing for financial reform and innovation and attracts financial institutions with good business environment.

The mayor added that Shanghai wants to increase cooperation with international financial centers, such as New York and London. The ANZ is one of the biggest Australian investors in China and has contributed a lot to China's modernization and Shanghai's economic and social development.

He said he hoped the ANZ can get more involved in Shanghai's change into an international financial center and promised to create even better environment for foreign financial institutions like ANZ.

Gonski said China's achievements are impressive and Shanghai's development is inspiring. ANZ's business is closely related with China, including Shanghai and the company wants to get more involved in Shanghai's development.
