13 years for corrupt former Party chief

AN official in eastern China's Jiangsu Province has been sentenced to 13 years behind bars for taking bribes worth millions of yuan.

Dong Feng, former Party secretary of a district in Jiang°?su's Xuzhou City, and one of his mistresses, Chen Wen, were found guilty of soliciting and accepting bribes, Xinhua news agency reported.

Dong's attorney, Liu Jian°?hua, told the Oriental Morning Post prosecutors charged Dong and Chen with taking 2.82 million yuan (US$412,269) over 44 occasions.

Chen was also given a jail term of three and a half years.

Dong's case was highly publicized by local governments. Xuzhou City held a conference on December 10 to inform Party members and government workers about Dong's corruption case. More than a thousand were reported to attend the meeting.

In court, Dong admitted Chen was his mistress. Chen is 22 years younger than Dong and they have openly cohabited since 2006.

Chen was not his first mistress. In 1994, he forced his wife, Sui Chuanxia, to watch him having sex with another young woman. For several years, he compelled his wife to have sex with both him and his mistresses.

Dong also had children with some of his mistresses while he remained married to Sui.

In May 2006, Dong's wife reported her husband to Wang Peirong, a professor in a Xuzhou's university known for his campaigns against corruption.

Wang sent photos and evidence to the Xuzhou government but no action was taken. On July 6, Wang published the photos on the Internet. The next day, Dong confessed his extramarital affairs and he was arrested on corruption charges on July 17.
