15 killed in bar fire accident in East China province

A TOTAL of 15 people were killed in a fireworks accident in Changle City in east China's Fujian Province, the local government said.

The accident occurred at 23:30 pm Saturday after about ten young people in a birthday party set off fireworks at a local bar. The ceiling of the bar was then set fire, causing the tragedy, local police said.

The fire was put out at 0:20 am Sunday, but 15 people were choked to death.

Another 17 people were already out of danger after efficient rescue efforts, but three were still receiving emergency treatment, the government said.

Local government immediately set up a response team, headed by the city's top Party official, to deal with the accident. The injured should be rescued at all price, authorities said.

All entertainment sites were closed in the city. Further investigation into the accident was going on.

The accident was reported as the Chinese were celebrating the Spring Festival, or the Chinese Lunar New Year, the most important traditional holiday in the country. It fell on January 26 this year.
