20 seized over Fujian bar fire

POLICE have detained 20 suspects following a bar fire that killed 15 people on Saturday in east China's Fujian Province, the local government said.

Among those detained were some of the revelers who set off fireworks in the bar during a birthday celebration and the owners and managers of the establishment, according to the government of Changle City, where the accident took place.

The suspects could face lawsuits by the local prosecutor's office.

Of the 24 injured in the accident, one remains in critical condition and 23 are stable, doctors said.

As of Sunday, the government had closed 112 public venues including karaoke bars, dance clubs and recreation centers to carry out safety inspections.

Staff of local firefighting teams and work-safety regulators were inspecting recreation centers, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, markets, hospitals, schools, kindergartens and nursing homes.

Public venues found with substandard firefighting equipment or whose employees lack fire-control training will have to suspend operations until these problems are rectified, said a circular issued by the provincial administrations of public security and work safety yesterday.

The fire broke out in the Latin-style bar in Changle City at about 11:55pm on Saturday after 10 men and women at a birthday party set off fireworks on their table.

Nationwide, China saw more than 15,600 fires during the Spring Festival, which killed at least 70 people and led to direct losses worth 43 million yuan (US$6.14 million), the Ministry of Public Security said yesterday.

February sees the largest number of residential fires in China, because the Lunar New Year usually falls in February, and fireworks count as a major reason for residential fires during this period.

In Beijing, fireworks caused 75 accidents and injured 46 on January 25, the Lunar New Year's Eve. The number of fire-related accidents was 17 percent lower than last year, officials said.
