4 held over killer drug
CHINESE police have detained four suspects for selling fake diabetes drugs that have killed two patients in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, a government spokesperson said yesterday.
Food and drug authorities have started a nationwide check for the fake drugs, said Yan Jiangying, spokeswoman for the State Food and Drug Administration.
She did not give any details about the detained suspects.
The Ministry of Health issued an urgent notice last Friday calling for medical institutions nationwide to immediately stop using a diabetes drug branded "Tang Zhi Ning Jiao Nang" when two patients died on January 17 and 19 after taking the drug.
The death-causing drugs contain an illegal chemical ingredient and were illegally using the brand "Tang Zhi Ning Jiao Nang" originally owned by the Guangxi Pingnan Pharmaceutical Co.
The SFDA was investigating the source and distribution of the fake drugs, she said, adding that preliminary investigation showed that the fake drugs were not made in Xinjiang.
The ministry asked medical institutions to record cases where drugs with the same brand had been used.
Most of the fake drugs have been seized but more than 1,300 bottles were still in circulation, state radio reported.
The fake drug has not been found in Shanghai. Any person finding the drug, with the batch number 081101, should call the city drug agency's hotline 962727.
