7 policemen arrested over suspicious death
SEVEN policemen have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the death of a man in custody in Jiangxi Province, Chengdu Business Daily reported today.
The seven policemen include two deputy directors of criminal investigation teams of the public security bureau in Nanchang City, the province's capital.
Suspect Wan Jianguo died on August 8. His relatives haven't received an autopsy report from prosecutors yet, the report said. His wife, Wu Peifeng, only received a notice that Wan died "abnormally" that day.
Wan was in police custody "to assist in an investigation" after six people died from a tainted protein produced by a pharmaceutical company, according to the newspaper.
The victims died between May 22 and 28 at No. 2 Hospital Affiliated with Nanchang University after being given tainted human immunoglobulin produced by Jiangxi Boya Bio Medicine Co.
"I have heard nothing about the case and there is no comment from our side as the investigation continues," Li Longwu, an official from Public Security Department of Jiangxi Province, told the newspaper.
The report quoted an unidentified public bureau official as saying Wan may have been beaten to death by the policemen. The official said a senior bureau employee once said whoever solved the tainted protein case would be given a "Second Grade Hero and Model" reward and that the officers may have thought they were helping crack a big case, according to the report.
Police detained Wan, a sales representative of Nanchang County Pharmaceutical Company, to assist in the investigation on July 5. It was unclear why Wan was detained for assistance as he did not work at the company that produced the tainted protein.
Human immunoglobulin is a protein produced from human plasma cells and lymphocytes. It plays an essential role in the body's immune system.
