9 new swine flu victims in Guangdong, Fujian
Nine new cases of swine flu were reported in south China's Guangdong Province and Fujian Province in the east yesterday, bringing the total confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland to 58.
The Guangdong cases involved two women age 41 and 61, a 29-year-old man and a 12-year-old boy.
The 41-year-old Chinese Canadian traveled to Zhongshan City in Guangdong last Friday from Toronto via Hong Kong. She developed a cough and fever two days later.
The other woman, a Chinese American, arrived in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong, last Thursday from San Francisco. She was sent to a hospital on Monday with flu symptoms and tested positive for the H1N1 virus.
The 29-year-old American man was discovered to have a fever at the Guangzhou airport on Monday after he flew in from New York.
The Chinese boy fell ill at his Guangzhou home on Tuesday, a day after he arrived in Hong Kong from New York via Los Angeles and Seoul.
A total of 117 people who had close contact with the four patients have been put under medical observation.
Fujian in east China reported five new swine flu victims yesterday, including two cases of local transmission.
A four-year-old girl living in Fuzhou, capital of Fujian, was infected after she met with her three sisters from the United States last Thursday. After her sisters tested positive for swine flu early this week, she also fell ill.
Another local transmission case involved a 46-year-old Chinese man who had traveled and had meals with a friend from New York.
The man and his friend, a 46-year-old American male, were both confirmed as H1N1 patients yesterday.
Two other new cases involved a 33-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man, both of whom came from New York to Fuzhou last Thursday via Hong Kong.
The World Health Organization reported that the disease has reached 66 countries and infected more than 19,000 people, causing 117 deaths.
