95 drugs cases heard by courts in just two weeks
In the two weeks before yesterday's International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, 132 suspects involved in 95 drug criminal cases had been prosecuted, the Shanghai Prosecutors' Office said.
The cases involved more than 135 kilograms of drugs, with heroin and methamphetamine, or ice, making up most of the total. Fourteen of the cases involved amounts exceeding 1 kilogram.
The average age of the suspects was 36 and 21 were women. Almost half the suspects were Shanghai natives and most of the suspects were unemployed males.
Ice has become the main drug in the city, followed by ketamine and ecstasy, police said.
"Users of ice range from teenagers to people over 60," said Tong Min, a police officer.
"Even some white collar workers were trapped by the drug simply out of the pursuit for 'fashion' and to escape from life's pressures."
According to police, entertainment venues such as pubs, karaoke bars and hair salons have proved to be the major venues for the taking of drugs and more than 192 suspects were arrested in 66 cases in a crackdown on entertainment places in the past two years.
Police said businesses would face closure for three to six months if they were involved in drug-related cases. Repeated offenses would lead to permanent closure.
In the biggest case still being prosecuted, Zhang Jie is alleged to have instructed an accomplice to traffic 2.9 kilograms of ice from Sichuan Province to Shanghai.
The trafficker was caught on August 15 last year on an expressway and police said they later seized more than 1.8 kilograms of the drug at Zhang's home.
In another case, a Togo man was seized by Customs officers at Pudong International Airport in April with an alleged 3.5 kilograms of heroin hidden in his luggage.
