APEC urged to strive for Asia-Pacific dream
CHINESE President Xi Jinping yesterday called for efforts to create and fulfill an Asia-Pacific dream, saying China’s economy will bring huge opportunities and benefits to the region and to the world.
He made the remarks at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO Summit, attended by more than 1,500 business leaders from 21 APEC member economies, and 17 other countries and regions.
The Asia-Pacific region has a strong impetus for development, a bright future and a rising standing in the world, but it is “at a crossroads,” Xi said.
He listed several challenges facing the region, such as the lingering impact of the global financial crisis, the fragile recovery of some economies, and the task of raising economic equality and efficiency.
“The development prospect of our region hinges on the decisions and actions we take today,” he said. “We are duty-bound to create and fulfill an Asia-Pacific dream for our people.”
The dream is about acting in the spirit of the Asia-Pacific community and out of a sense of shared destiny, following the trend of peace, development and mutually beneficial cooperation, and jointly working for the prosperity and progress of the region, Xi said.
It is about staying ahead of global development and making a contribution to the well-being of mankind, he said.
The dream is about having economic vibrancy, free trade and investment facilitation, better roads, and closer people-to-people exchanges, he said.
Moreover, it is about ensuring greater security and prosperity for the people and giving children a better environment in which to grow, work and live.
To realize the Asia-Pacific dream, the region’s economies must explore new drivers for growth and draw a blueprint for connectivity, Xi said.
Economies should “work for new economic institutions and regional cooperation ... so that the door of the Asia-Pacific will always be open to the entire world,” he said.
As the fastest growing region in the world, Asia-Pacific accounts for 40 percent of the global population, 57 percent of the global economy and 48 percent of global trade.
Xi said China has been growing steadily as a “new normal” has emerged. Under the new normal conditions, economic growth is more stable and driven by more diverse forces, while the economic structure has been improved and upgraded.
“The intensity of our endeavor to deepen reform will determine whether we successfully adapt to the new normal,” he said.
He also said that as China’s strength grows, it will be “both capable and willing to provide more public goods for the Asia-Pacific and the world.”
