Aftershock risk in disaster zone
AUTHORITIES have warned of possible aftershocks following the tremor that rattled Yunnan Province on Sunday.
Though not guaranteed, the possibility of aftershocks of magnitude 5 or 6 happening in the coming days “cannot be ruled out,” said Pan Huaiwen, director of the China Earthquake Networks Center, yesterday.
Rescuers and locals should remain vigilant, he said, adding that the center is monitoring the situation.
Pan attributed the high number of casualties resulting from the quake to the poor condition of local buildings and the harsh mountainous environment.
