Agency under fire for smearing milk brands
A social organization in Hunan Province has come under fire for accusing three baby formula producers of adding a banned flavoring which could harm the livers and kidneys of infants.
The Hunan Association for Credibility Promotion said it received tip-offs that milk powder of three international brands, Wyeth, Abbott and Mead Johnson, contained vanillin and asked the association to investigate. A Hunan University laboratory tested the samples at the request of the association.
Xi Qing, spokesperson of Wyeth China, said the tests were not in line with China's required food testing procedure. Companies should be asked to confirm the samples are from their products before the tests and companies have the right to ask for a recheck, but Wyeth China was not informed to confirm the samples before the tests.
Insiders said vanillin is easy to detect and the possibility of the three producers adding vanillin in their milk powder is very low.
The university's report said the tested milk powder contained 185mg to 354mg of vanillin per kilogram.
The association said it is a non-profit organization to supervise business conduct of industries including food manufacturing.
Any organization or individual is banned from releasing food safety information without government authorization, according to the Chinese law.
