Airport hostage incident over quickly

A MAN fired a gun and tried to take a woman hostage in an incident at an airport in Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China's Sichuan Province, last night.

The Sichuan airport authority said the man fired a gun twice at about 9.20pm near a security check in the departure hall of the Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport.

The man, identified as Jiang Jun, then grabbed a female passenger and ran to a passageway but was immediately wrestled down by security guards. The hostage was released unhurt.

Jiang, 23, is from Sichuan's Yanting County and police said he was carrying a starting pistol and three bullets which he had bought on-line and received that very day.

Police investigations are continuing.

Flight schedules were not affected by the incident.
