Airport workers charged with organizing human smuggling

BEIJING prosecutors charged 12 airport workers for organizing human smuggling, a newspaper reported today.

Prosecutors accused the 12 suspects of smuggling 13 stowaways in the past two years. The case will be tried at Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court, Beijing Times said.

The scheme was discovered on December 28, 2007, when the gang allegedly tried to smuggle four Fujian Province natives to Canada. Frontier inspection officials discovered the four stowaways just before they boarded a plane. They were sent to police.

They confessed to police they paid 500,000 yuan (US$73,529) each to Zheng Deduan of Hong Kong and planned to sneak into Canada to find a job, the report said.

They also told police they were sent to the parking apron in a car belonging to Air China Cargo Co Ltd to avoid customs, frontier inspection and security checks, the report said.

Police caught Zhao Tongbao, the driver of the vehicle. He confessed that there were 11 others involved in the smuggling ring including security guards and other airport staff.

Of the alleged accomplices, driver Mi Changshan and security guard Zhu Yonglin were the leaders, the report said.

Mi and Zhu were responsible for contacting Zheng, who also had four accomplices, all from Singapore.

According to their plan, they would cancel the trip if frontier inspection officials were working near the plane, according to the report. However, the suspects failed to see the officials that day.
