Alleged ax murder suspect planned to kill 9 others

THE man suspected of killing eight people with an ax in central China on January 4 had planned to hack another nine he had disputes with, local media reported.

Xiong Zhenlin, 35, was seized by police on January 11 in Wuhan, capital of Hubei province. He later confessed he would carry out more attacks on Chinese News Year's Eve, two newspapers in Wuhan reported today.

Police said Xiong had psychological problems but didn't suffer a mental disorder and that a psychiatric assessment would not be necessary.

Officers said Xiong lost faith in life as his marriage proposals were refused by both his girlfriend and ex wife. Xiong divorced Liu Jihua but his girlfriend Zhu Deqing was unwilling to marry him. He tried to remarry Liu but failed. Zhu and her grandson were among the eight allegedly killed by Xiong.

Xiang, a waste recycling station owner in Hubei's Suizhou City, also suffered a huge loss due to the global financial crisis as prices for waste materials nosedived starting in the second half of last year.

The man also had unhappy experiences with his employees, police said.

Xiong told police some among the eight victims had disputes with him, according to the reports. He then planned to kill nine others over various disputes ranging from people gossiping about his affairs and unfriendly text messages being sent to him, the report said.

On January 5, Xiong fled as police officers visited his recycling station over an unrelated case.

Xiong said he rode a motorcycle first and then took a long haul bus to Wuhan and then traveled to Hainan Province, according to previous reports.

He returned to Wuhan on January 10 and planned to make a fake ID to hunt down the others on his list, but was discovered while taking an ID photo, the reports said.

Zou Chuanshuo and his grandmother Zhu Deqing, 43, were found dead in their home in Luoyang Town on January 5. Head wounds suggested the attacker had used an ax, a spokesman for Suizhou's public security department has said.

Xiong was named a suspect in the case as he had dated Zhu in the past.

Police searched Xiong's junkyard and found six more bodies as well as blood-stained axes and hammers.

The bodies of three men and three women were identified as Xiong's employees. They were all natives of Luoyang Town and aged from 45 to 69.
