Ancient city unearthed in Xinjiang

RUINS of an ancient city have been discovered in the Lop Nur region of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, news Website iyaxin.com reported today.

The city was unearthed about 6.3 kilometers from another site named Xiaohe Graveyard Complex, and was probably called Zhubin according to historical documents, said Lu Houyuan and Xia Xuncheng, two noted researchers into the legendary Loulan civilization.

The newly discovered ruins are smaller than Loulan, found in 1901 and hailed as the Pompeii of the desert. They are thought to date back to around 440 to 500AD.

That's when China was ruled by the North Wei dynasty. "Shuijingzhu," a classic book on China's river systems, first mentioned the existence of Zhubin.

Lu and Xia told the Website that they temporalily named the city "ancient Zhubin River City" because more excavation and research was needed to confirm the city's identity.

The city's function in Loulan civilization also needs future exploration, Xia said. But it was doubtlessly important in its time because it was located near an ancient postal relay of the Silk Road.
