Axeman kidnaps 65 pupils over dispute

A CENTRAL China villager armed with an axe and a knife kidnapped 65 pupils from a primary school to demand settlement over a neighborhood dispute.

The 41-year-old man, surnamed Yuan, was caught by police at the scene and all the pupils were rescued sound and safe, today's Dahe Daily reported.

Yuan, a villager in Xincai County of Henan Province, posed as a plumber to enter a grade-four classroom in Yuanying School around 7:50am on Monday.

He nailed shut the two doors to prevent the pupils escaping and threatened the children with an axe and knife, police said.

Police arrived to negotiate and rescued the children unharmed, the newspaper said

Yuan later told police that he did it to attract attention to his dispute with village officials.
