Baby, 7 adults are killed in ax attacks
HUBEI Province police were searching last night for a man who allegedly hacked eight people to death with an ax.
The victims included a 2-year-old baby, and the motive may have been anger over a spurned offer of marriage.
The manhunt began on Monday after 42-year-old Zhu Deqing and her grandson Zou Chuanshuo were found dead in their home in Suizhou City's Luoyang Town, Beijing Times reported yesterday.
Police said their injuries appeared to have been inflicted by an ax.
Police identified Xiong Zhenlin, a waste recycling station owner, as the prime suspect.
They found six more bodies at Xiong's place of business. Those victims, all in their 50s or 60s, were Xiong's employees.
Police said they also found a blood-stained ax, hammer and fork that were used in the killings.
Rewards of 5,000 yuan (US$731) to 50,000 yuan have been offered to people who provide information that leads to the capture and conviction of the suspect.
According to Beijing Times, a preliminary police investigation revealed that a recent conflict between Xiong and Zhu might have sparked the killings.
Xiong divorced last year and wanted to marry Zhu, but she declined, authorities said. He then sought to remarry his ex-wife, but she also rejected him.
Xiong, 35, had been married for many years but had no children by his ex-wife, who adopted one.
Zhu's husband died years ago, and her son and daughter-in-law were working away from home.
Local residents said it was difficult to understand what motive could have caused Xiong to kill his employees.
"We're using about 200 police, and we're doing our utmost to catch the killer," said a Suizhou police officer.
