Baby's Virus Avian
THE Center for Health Protection in Hong Kong yesterday announced that the result of gene sequencing of the H9N2 virus found in a baby girl indicated all genes in the virus were of avian origin.
The two-month baby girl contracted H9N2, a mild form of avian flu, in December last year.
A CHP spokesman said the virus found in the girl was sensitive to antiviral medicine.
The girl is still under treatment in Tuen Mun Hospital for another disease. Her symptoms of H9N2 infection have subsided and no one who came into close contact with her developed any infection.
"The epidemiological and genetic findings so far suggest that the H9N2 virus has shown no signs of increased risk for human-to- human transmission," the spokesman said.
