Beijing tightens postal services security
All parcels sent to Beijing during events marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II will be scanned and must have both the sender’s and receiver’s real names, China’s postal authorities announced at the weekend.
A series of events marking the end of the war culminates in a military parade in the capital on September 3.
The security measures are essential as part of efforts to ensure a safe environment during the commemorations, said Ma Junsheng, director of the China Post Bureau.
Ma said courier companies must ensure all parcels entering the capital have the real names of senders and receivers, which means people will have to show their identity cards when sending or receiving packages.
Ma also said that all parcels arriving in Beijing would be put through security scanners.
The bureau will also be meeting postal authorities in cities and provinces around the capital, urging cooperation in the establishment of a comprehensive safety network to keep the delivery industry running smoothly and securely, Ma said.
Among other security measures during the commemorations will be the closure of airports in the capital between 9:30am and 12:30pm on September 3.
The public security ministry has also called for police forces in and around the capital to enhance security to guarantee “absolute safety” of the military parade and the Athletics World Championships later this month.
The ministry also instructed police to enhance inspection of safety hazards and to strengthen patrols in key areas.
