Beverage prices rising, producers blame higher cost
SOME domestic drinks producers have chalked up their retail prices from 5 percent to more than 20 percent, claiming they are compelled by rising production costs, Beijing Youth Daily reported.
The report said the retail price of a 2.5-liter bottle of Pepsi Cola in Beijing's supermarkets has climbed from 4.50 yuan to 5.50 yuan, but the canned drink sells at the original price.
Some producers, such as Huiyuan Juice, Master Kong and Wahaha Nutri-Express Drink, haven't raised their prices for supermarkets, but a Beijing beverage dealer told the newspaper that the wholesale price of Wahaha has already gone up by from 48 yuan per case to 50 yuan. He can only earn one yuan from each case.
Master Kong also confirmed to the newspaper that its beverage products will have a price rise in this month.
Huiyuan denied that their prices would remain unchanged before the Spring Festival. A Huiyuan executive, Yue Jianye, said they were considering the price raise.
"The unit price of fruit juice we import from Brazil has increased from 1,000 yuan per ton to 3,600 yuan. That means we have to change," Yue told the newspaper.
Zhou Siran, a food industry researcher at China Investment Consulting, said the biggest pressure for drinks producers came from rising costs for fruits, sugar and packing materials.
