Bounty offered to catch gangsters in man's death

POLICE in southern Guangdong Province are looking for clues to track down a dozen gangsters who stabbed a young man to death early this month as the victim tried to protect his wife from sexual assault.

You Yu's sudden death devastated his wife Yang Chunyan. The couple has a one-year-old daughter.

The disaster befell them on the night of March 7. The couple just finished their night shift in a village factory in Dongguan City and was walking home when they ran into the gangsters.

"I wanted to buy a phone card on the way home and my husband was accompanying me," Yang told the Guangzhou-based Southern Daily.

She said a dozen young men were talking loudly on the street and she felt unsafe and tried to hurry away when one man stopped her and started groping her. Yang struggled to get free but the man wouldn't stop. Her husband shouted at him. Immediately, other gangsters swooped down on him.

You was seen nailed to the ground, hit and kicked for more than 10 minutes. One man in his 20s was seen waving a knife before You as he was attacked. Yang said her husband died of knife wounds.

All the assailants fled without a trace before policemen arrived.

Dongguan police are now offering a reward of 20,000 yuan for tips leading to the arrest of the gangsters. Local villagers said they were hooligans who wandered about in underground gambling dens.

You's mother and brother were also injured by the mob as they came to his rescue, The mother had three fingers chopped, police said.

The family told the newspaper that they planned to move out of the village to protect the toddler. They are afraid the assailants would punish them for alarming the police and the little girl is an easy target.

The attack took place a short distance from the family's rented house.
