Box of fake cash found on Hunan bus
A BOX containing counterfeit 100-yuan bank notes valued at more than 400,000 yuan (US$58,500) was seized by police in Hunan Province, China News Service reported yesterday.
Police found the box of fake bills during a routine check of a long-haul bus.
A consigned box of milk drew the attention of a policeman about 4:30am on January 16, the report said.
"The brand of milk is very common here and the box was heavy with traces of re-packing, so officers thought it must be something else," a police officer told the news service. Police opened the box and found piles of new 100-yuan fake notes, all starting with the serial number "HB90." Previous reports said counterfeit notes starting with HB90 were in circulation on the Chinese mainland.
The bus driver said the owner of the box was not on the bus. Three policemen went undercover, posing as the owner of the bus, the conductor and a passenger in order to catch the owner of the fake notes, China News Service reported.
About 4:50am a man in his twenties turned up to pick up the box and was arrested at the scene, the report said.
China's Ministry of Public Security launched a campaign against fake bank notes after high-quality counterfeits were found ahead of the Spring Festival, the report said.
The nationwide campaign, "Action 09," will go after those who produce and use fake notes, especially in 10 provinces including Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang.
During the 10-month campaign, individuals will be rewarded 300,000 yuan (US$44,000) for providing information about fake-bill factories, the report said.
Rewards will also be given to those providing information about people using, selling, transporting or purchasing counterfeit cash.
