Brewer insists rice wine safe despite HK warning

A BREWER listed on Shanghai Stock Exchange, one of the country's most prominent rice wine producers, denied that a substance that is commonly present during alcoholic fermentation is carcinogenic after Hong Kong's Consumer Council charged that its products have a probable cancer link.

The Zhejiang Guyuelongshan Shaoxing Wine Co Ltd, based in Zhejiang Province responded late yesterday after the Hong Kong organization published test results suggesting one of the company's rice wine contains the highest amount of ethyl carbamate, 0.26 milligram per kilogram, among the wines it tested.

The company said ethyl carbamate is naturally formed, and it widely exists in fermented foods and beverages, according to a company announcement.

Rice wine is a traditional beverage and is good for people's health if consumed in moderation.

It emphasized its products are reliable and safe and advocated moderate intake, amid a 4.2 percent drop of in the price of its stock, which ended at 14.59 yuan (US$2.29) yesterday.

The Hong Kong organization quoted the Joint Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization Expert Committee on Food Additives saying that ethyl carbamate can cause genetic damage and cancer in many organs in animal experiments.

The Consumer Council said it did tests on 36 Asian alcoholic beverages, including 16 Shaoxing wines (Hua Diao Wine, Nu Er Hong Wine, Chia Fan Chiew and Wang Wine), eight glutinous rice wines and also on 12 plum wines.
