Brewery boss loses appeal against life sentence

A FORMER boss of China's biggest brewer has lost his appeal against a life sentence for graft.

The Anhui Higher People's Court recently upheld a ruling last year by the Suzhou Intermediate People's Court that found Wang Xiaojin guilty of taking about 10 million yuan (US$1.45 million) in bribes.

Wang was the chairman of Gujing Group Co, based in Bozhou City, Anhui Province, and he was also the vice-chairman of the Bozhou People's Political Consultative Conference.

He was arrested on November 8, 2007, and tried on July 24 last year.

The Suzhou court found Wang took advantage of his positions to accumulate 5.07 million yuan, US$670,000 and 50,000 Hong Kong dollars (US$6,450) in bribes from October 1991 to March 2007, with business dealings involving joint-venture operations, business mergers and acquisitions, company management, loans and advertising contracts.

It sentenced Wang to life imprisonment and confiscated all his assets.

Nearly 10 senior executives from Gujing Group have been convicted by the court of first instance. Gan Shaoyu, the former general manager of one of the group's subsidiaries, was sentenced to 15 years prison. Guo Xinmin, a former deputy general manager of the group's sales arm in Bozhou, was received the death penalty with a two-year reprieve. Ruan Kunhua, the former chairman of one of the group's subsidiaries, was sentenced to 10 years.
