Cabinet approves plan to promote western regions
THE State Council, or China's Cabinet, said yesterday that it had approved a plan to accelerate development in the western regions till the end of 2015, a move that is expected to narrow the gap among different areas.
The growth plan set goals concerning economic, infrastructure, construction, environment, public service and people's living standards that are much higher than that of the economically-developed coastal and eastern regions.
China's western regions cover a vast land of its 12 provincial areas - Xinjiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, Guangxi, Ningxia, Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan, Chongqing, Shaanxi, Guizhou and Yunnan.
According to a statement on the State Council's website, the economies of these regions will grow at a faster rate than the national average, while the residential income growth will outpace the country's average growth rate during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015).
About 15,000 kilometers of new railway lines will be opened by the end of 2015, while the urban population is expected to exceed 45 percent of the region's total, according to the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner that made the plan.
