China adds hundreds of new train services
MOST of the new trains link small cities in central and west China with metropolises and hopes are high that better connectivity means increased prosperity.
Travelers to and from Shanghai can expect faster and more frequent services thanks to 33 new trains, the city’s railway officials said.
Previously, trains between Shanghai and Beijing ran between 6:30am to 5:30pm. Now a G8 train will leave Hongqiao Railway Station at 7pm each day and arrive in Beijing before midnight.
The T138 train from Shanghai to Xi’an in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province will become the Z252 with a journey time about 25 minutes shorter to 16 hours and 5 minutes. The K137 train from Shanghai South to Changsha in central China’s Hunan Province will be upgraded to a Z247 and cut more than three hours off the journey.
A G7252 train will run from Shanghai to Hefei in east China’s Anhui Province, reducing the travel time by 41 minutes to 2 hours and 9 minutes.
A K1048 train will be added between Shanghai and Luohe in Henan, reducing the journey time by more than 8 hours to 15 hours and 33 minutes.
In the past five years, about 1.85 trillion yuan (US$283 billion) has been spent on railways in central and western areas, with about 23,000 kilometers of new lines opened. Last year, 9,531 kilometers of new lines went into operation. China plans to spend 3.5 trillion yuan over the next five years on more than 30,000 kilometers of new track.
