China supports UN call

FOREIGN Minister Yang Jiechi told United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon yesterday that a UN resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza would be observed.

In a phone conversation, Yang said that UN Resolution 1860 reflected the strong desire of the international community for an immediate cease-fire, the alleviation of the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, and the promotion of peace and stability in the region.

Yang stressed that the priority should be the faithful observance of the resolution by all parties involved.

First, the immediate cease-fire and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip should be realized; and second, the humanitarian crisis should be mitigated as soon as possible while non-interference in humanitarian assistance and the security of UN personnel should be guaranteed, Yang said.

Yang added that China would continue its efforts to ease tensions, alleviate the crisis and push for a cease-fire negotiation.

Ban said he was to visit Gaza soon in the hope of ensuring the implementation of the UN resolution.
