Closed schools are not run by Project Hope
A GREAT number of school children in China's poverty-stricken rural areas are neglected in the current round of school mergers, the Beijing Times reported today.
Many village-run schools don't belong to Project Hope, a government-endorsed program that seeks public donations to extend education to children in impoverished areas, said Xu Meng, secretary of the China Youth Development Foundation, which is the organizer of Project Hope.
Xu was responding to recent media reports that more and more Hope Schools had been closed in villages, causing a huge waste of public donations. Some were converted into community centers; others were used as warehouses or even farms to raise pigs and chicken.
Xu estimated that nearly 70 percent village schools would be closed or merged by the end of this year as local governments integrate educational resources by merging several village schools into a county-level school. This led to overcrowded classrooms, higher burden on parents, and poor education quality.
Many village schools were set up by local governments using the Hope School brand, Xu said.
Hope Schools managed by his foundation have far less vacancy rate, less then 5 percent, as the foundation sets a high threshold and standard to build a school, Xu added.
