Cold sweeps north China, bringing snow and gales
The cold current sweeping northern China yesterday brought rain and snow as temperatures plummeted.
In Beijing, some districts saw rain from yesterday morning, and the meteorological department said temperatures in the capital will start to fall this morning.
Snow, sleet and winds of up to 38 kilometers per hour are forecast for the capital today. Rain and snow should clear tomorrow, with temperatures creeping up to 10 degrees Celsius, said meteorological authorities.
Yesterday, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) forecast blizzards for parts of northern China.
Heavy snow will hit Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Shanxi and the mountainous areas in western Beijing, said a posting on the NMC website.
The NMC also issued a blue warning on blizzards - the lowest level in the disaster alarm scale after yellow, orange and red.
It said that temperatures will drop up to 10 degrees Celsius over two days in eastern Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, southwestern Liaoning, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, northwestern Hunan and northern Zhejiang.
The public are advised to keep warm amid temperature drops and related departments should guard against disasters brought by blizzards and freezing, the forecast said.
Hebei Meteorological Observatory said yesterday that temperatures in the province would fall in the following two days. The lowest temperature in the northern areas in Bashang Prairie is forecast to drop to minus 13 degrees Celsius.
The observatory has issued snow, rain and cold current alert to warn relevant departments in Hebei to make full preparations to mitigate the cold weather's impact.
In north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, rainfall and snow have caused several rear-end collisions on expressways in the region.
Staff at Hohhot Baita Airport said yesterday that flights had not been affected.
Local governments in Shanxi Province have given notice to relevant departments to firmly fix billboards, canopies and fences in place.
Citizens were advised not to ride bicycles and take part in outdoor activities at high altitudes.
The environmental sanitation department of Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi Province, reported that it has 2,100 tonnes of snow-melting agent at the ready to deal with large amounts of snow.
