Cooped-up girl no longer talks

A SIX-YEAR-OLD girl in southwest China has become aphasic, losing the ability to use or understand language after being confined naked to a chicken coop for six months by her grandmother.
Local government officials visited the girl's home in Longtan Town of Chongqing Municipality and freed the girl 10 days ago after she was discovered by a passer-by, Chongqing Evening News reported yesterday.
The girl is unable to speak and appears retarded, the newspaper said. Neighbors said she used to be a lovely girl who could speak clearly.
Her widowed grandmother, Guo Changshou, 63, confined her to a bamboo chicken coop built by her boyfriend Yu Bohua, 57, about six months ago, Guo told the newspaper.
Yu said he had tried to prevent Guo from confining the girl, but Guo didn't listen.
Guo said the girl's father left the girl in her care three years ago when he moved elsewhere to find work after her mother died. Guo said she felt helpless having to take care of the girl alone while also working in the field and she became even more annoyed when the girl soiled her clothes.
The girl lived on food left by neighbors as the grandmother didn't even feed her.
Government officials have left the girl in Guo's care but have warned her against any further abuse, the report said.
