Cooperation the key, Wen tells China-Eurasia Expo

CHINESE Premier Wen Jiabao yesterday called on Eurasian countries to maintain stability and further open up their markets to promote common development.

"The Eurasian continent is one of the most promising regions in the world in terms of consumption and investment," Wen said at the opening ceremony of the second China-Eurasia Expo in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China.

Wen said that as long as China and Eurasian countries opened their markets to each other and drew on each other's strengths, they could develop long and stable cooperation.

China is to explore the possibility of setting up a China-Central Asia economic cooperation fund and an agricultural cooperation fund in an effort to bolster economic links with neighboring countries, he said.

China is also considering building several trade zones and agricultural demonstration centers in neighboring countries.

Wen said the two sides should deepen cooperation in customs, quality inspection, e-commerce, transit transport, standard certification and intellectual property rights, facilitate a free flow of personnel, goods, capital, technology and services within the region, and jointly resist trade protectionism.

He called on the two sides to improve existing regional and sub-regional cooperation mechanisms and speed up negotiations on bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements.

Cooperative projects should be more oriented toward the well-being of the people so that more people can share the fruits of regional economic cooperation, the Chinese premier added.

Wen urged Eurasian countires to maintain a peaceful and stable environment.

"Nothing could be achieved without a peaceful and stable environment, he said, reiterating China's belief that regional affairs shoud be determined by countries and peoples of this region.

"China opposes outside intervention," he added.

With regard to cultural and people-to-people exchanges between China and Eurasia, Wen said the two sides should expand dialogue and exchanges, respect each other's cultural traditions and religious customs, and promote mutual learning and harmonious coexistence of different races, religions, beliefs and cultures.

Wen encouraged countries to send more students to each other, build joint universities and strengthen cooperation in human resources training.

"History proves that stronger cultural and people-to-people exchanges will expand mutual understanding and common views among the Eurasian people, and bolster friendly relations between the countries," the premier said.

The expo, which ends on Friday, has attracted leaders from eight countries, including Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan, and participants from 55 countries and regions.
