Cops suspended after failure to prevent fatal attack

THREE police officers have been suspended for dereliction of duty which allegedly resulted in the murder after a brawl and robbery of a resident in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province.

The officers failed to respond despite receiving four calls for help from the victim's family before the fatal attack, today's Hubei Daily reported.

Police have detained the alleged murderer, Wu Jun, 34, who lived in the same neighborhood of the victim, Li Dongfeng, the report said.

The brawl started around 11pm on Sunday when Guo Zhen, boyfriend of Li Dongfeng's daughter Li Fei, was robbed of a 3,300-yuan (US$482.82) valued gold necklace by a passing man shortly after he accompanied Li Fei home on Wusheng Street in Wuhan's Jianghan District.

Li Dongfeng helped Guo fight to retrieve the necklace. During the fight, Li Fei called police twice for help.

Officers didn't show up on the scene but, instead, two patrolling community guards were alerted, the Lis said. The guards stopped the fight and took Wu away, saying they were taking him to a nearby police station.

But shortly after, Wu ran back to the Lis' home and stabbed Li Dongfeng twice.

During the attack, Li Fei again twice called police. The officers didn't arrive until 11:40pm when Li Dongfeng was lying in a pool of blood and the robber had escaped.

Li Dongfeng was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead hours later.

The Lis blamed the late arrival of police for the fatal tragedy, as the officers appeared nearly an hour after the first call for help.
