Corrupt cop sobs as he's jailed for life

A FORMER police chief in Chongqing Municipality was sentenced to life in prison today for conniving with the city's rampant crime rings and taking 4.71 million yuan (US$689,909) in bribes.

Chongqing No.1 Intermediate People's Court said Peng Changjian, 47, former deputy director of the city's Public Security Bureau, was one of the major umbrellas protecting the city's gangs.

Peng was found guilty of bribery, protecting crime rings, and possession of a large amount of property he failed to account for. Peng could not account for the source of more than 4.67 million yuan of his assets.

The court also fined him 500,000 yuan and traced back all 4.71 million yuan bribes and the suspect properties.

The bribes he took also include some from his subordinates who sought promotion, the court said.

Peng sobbed when he heard the sentence. He said he regretted that he took bribes but could not agree with the charges of protecting gangs.
