County introduces corruption insurance plan

OFFICIALS in a southern China county have been ordered to pay up to 300 yuan (US$44) a month to insure against corruption and being held responsible for major accidents.

The government of Chengmai County, Hainan Province, has set up a fund and asked its government workers to pay the insurance from January. Heads of the county's government agencies and township leaders will pay 300 yuan every month, while other township officials will pay 200 yuan. Village heads will have to pay 150 yuan monthly.

The county's finance department will deduct the money from their monthly salaries, according to Hinews.cn. Officials who have been punished or held responsible for incidents will have their insurance confiscated at the end of the year. The money confiscated will be used to reward officials who do well fighting corruption and maintaining social order.
