Dead woman's family receive 450,000 yuan bill
THE grieving family of a woman who died after being in hospital for a month receiving treatment for gallstones were shocked to be presented with a bill for 450,000 yuan (US$68,844).
Guangji Hospital in Dongguan City, south China's Guangdong Province, said the fee covered two operations, 330 kilograms of intravenous drip and more than 14,000 milliliters of blood.
Wu Xiying's family, who now face financial ruin, questioned whether it was necessary to give such a large volume of transfusions and accused the hospital of adopting the most expensive treatment plans without getting consent, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
The 49-year-old migrant worker was admitted to hospital on February 21 for gallstone disease, but died 28 days later. Wu's husband Xiao Guohai could pay only 1,300 yuan and is deep in debt.
Most of the medical expenses were incurred after Wu was transferred to intensive care following post-surgery complications, according to Gao Shusheng, deputy director of the hospital.
"The medical costs soared after the patient underwent continuous renal replacement therapy," said Gao.
The family have speculated that the hospital proceeded with further treatment without telling them as staff were trying tried to undo mistakes in the initial surgery.
The hospital admitted it didn't inform the family of possible costs.
Both parties have agreed to allow a forensic center to conduct an autopsy.
