Death sentence for man who murdered 8 people
A MAN convicted of killing eight people in 15 hours in central China was sentenced to death yesterday.
The Suizhou Intermediate People's Court in Hubei Province found Xiong Zhenlin guilty of a capital crime and issued the ruling at noon.
Xiong, 35, didn't appeal in court, but he is entitled to the right to appeal within 10 days of receiving the written judgment.
Xiong, the owner of a garbage recycling station in Hubei's Suizhou City, was found guilty of killing his girlfriend Zhu Deqing and her two-year-old grandson, plus four employees, a female garbage collector and a local villager. The killings took place from the early morning of January 4 to 12am the following day.
Victims included a deaf mute, said Wuhan-based Chutian Metropolis Daily. Xiong said after he was seized on January 11 that some of the victims had minor disputes with him. He said he'd murdered some of his victims to teach himself how to kill or because they witnessed him chopping up other victims.
The court heard Xiong killed his victims with an ax and then used the ax and a harpoon to make sure they were dead.
While being held before his trial Xiong sent a series of letters to his attorney, the media and the government to express regret and his willingness to compensate and repay society. He said in the letters he had been drinking before the killing spree and had suffered psychological problems for the past six months.
The killer asked for a mental health evaluation in the letters and said he hoped he would be granted amnesty. His application for a mental health evaluation was turned down by the court.
He told his attorney before standing trial that he was hoping for a death sentence with a two-year reprieve, which would have given him a chance of escaping execution and having his sentence commuted to life imprisonment.
"Xiong committed the murders out of mean and abominable motives. The way in which he perpetrated his crime was cruel beyond measure," the prosecution said. "There can be no leniency for his crime."
Earlier reports said Xiong had become frustrated after marriage proposals were refused by both his girlfriend and his ex-wife.
He also suffered financial losses as prices for waste materials fell in the second half of last year, police said.
