Death sentences for 3 hijackers
Three men were sentenced to death and another given a life sentence yesterday for the attempted hijacking of a Chinese aircraft in June.
A court in China's northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region said the four were among a group of six that tried to seize the aircraft after it took off from Hotan. But they were thwarted by passengers and crew.
Two of the gang later died from the injuries sustained when they were tackled.
The Intermediate People's Court in Hotan Prefecture convicted the four of organizing, leading or participating in a terrorist group, hijacking the aircraft and attempting to detonate explosives.
Musa Yvsup and Arxidikali Yimin, the leaders of the group who plotted the hijacking, and Eyumer Yimin, a major participant in the planning, were sentenced to death, a court statement said.
Alem Musa, who played a minor role in the hijacking and pleaded guilty after being arrested, received a life sentence, said the statement.
All the defendants confessed to their crimes in court.
The incident took place on June 29, after Tianjin Airlines flight GS7554 had taken off from Hotan Airport and when it was some 1,400 kilometers from its destination, the regional capital of Urumqi.
The would-be hijackers shouted religious extremist slogans and some attacked the cockpit with pieces of metal crutches they had taken onboard and which were sharpened at both ends.
They were subdued by crew members and passengers before they detonated explosives. The plane returned to Hotan.
Ababaykeri Ybelayim and Mametali Yvsup were so badly injured in the fight that they died despite medical treatment.
Twenty-four crew members and passengers were injured in the incident, which caused direct economic losses of 28.58 million yuan (US$4.58 million), the court statement said.
The court said that the group had been under the influence of religious extremists and terrorists from October 2011 to February 2012, and had been making preparations for their hijack attempt from the middle of May to June this year.
The group investigated airport security conditions and the layout of the aircraft several times before the hijack bid, and prepared items, which included explosives, metal crutches and lighters, in advance.
The group is said to have taken the decision that they would blow up the aircraft and die along with everyone else on board.
In court, the four gang members were represented by lawyers and their relatives and members of the public were also present.
China's aviation authorities have rewarded crew members and passengers for their heroic actions.
