Democratic Alliance polls well in Hong Kong
HONG Kong's largest political organization, the Democratic Alliance for Betterment and Progress, was the biggest winner in the city's District Council election, winning 136 seats out of a total of 412 seats, according to results released yesterday.
In Sunday's election, about 1,202,000 registered voters cast their votes, representing a provisional cumulative turnout of about 41.4 percent, compared with the previous election's 38.83 percent.
After visiting the counting station at Wong Nai Chung Sports Center, Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang said the turnout reflects Hong Kong people's support of the District Council's work.
He said people participated actively in the election process, which he said was a clear sign of advancing democracy.
Tsang was delighted with the turnout, which was higher than forecast. He said the election process was fair and open. He believed Hong Kong people will respect the final results.
Hong Kong's District Council has a total of 507 seats 鈥 68 will be appointed by the chief executive and 27 are reserved for ex officio rural committee members.
Of the 412 seats being elected, 76 were returned unopposed, leaving 839 -candidates to contest the remaining 336 seats in 18 districts.
