Drug baron executed after all assets seized
A DRUG baron who produced, sold and transported more than 10 tons of "ice" was executed yesterday in Guangzhou.
Chen Bingxi was found guilty of trafficking and manufacturing 12.36 tons of crystallized methamphetamine, also known as "ice," and selling and transporting more than 100 kilograms of heroin.
The Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court sentenced him to death and confiscated all of his personal assets on December 14, 2006. The Guangdong Higher People's Court upheld the sentence on November 7, 2008 and this was later approved by the Supreme People's Court.
Chen was born in Chishui Village of Puning City in Guangdong Province in 1956 and sold heroin in his youth before beginning his "ice" business in 1998.
After establishing contact with Zhang Qisheng, another Puning drug lord, Chen began to operate a wholesale narcotics business. Zhang has also been sentenced to death.
In November 1999, 108.85 kilograms of heroin belonging to Zhang were captured by Guangzhou police in a Guangzhou warehouse. Chen had 11.08 tons of "ice" stored in the same place and the volume of the drugs was said to be big enough to fill a basketball court.
When another 1.28 tons of "ice" was later found in Chen's hometown of Puning, his methamphetamine production line was uncovered.
Chen and his wife fled to Thailand in November 1999, but were arrested by police on November 4, 2003 and extradited to China the next day.
Chen's wife, Chen Baoyu, has been sentenced to 11 and a half years in prison and fined 3 million yuan (US$439,000) for producing drugs.
Another man, Liu Zhaohua, who worked with Chen was tried separately and has yet to be sentenced.
