Economic slowdown leads uni graduates to seek work as maids
UNIVERSITY graduates have begun to compete for jobs as domestic helpers due to the economic slowdown.
More than 2,000 university graduates, including 28 masters' degree holders, applied for domestic helper jobs between August and December at Guangzhou Home EZ Service Co Ltd, an agency in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, Guangzhou Daily reported today.
The agency targeted foreigners and rich people and offers its maids an average salary of between 2,300 yuan (US$338) and 2,500 yuan per month.
Guangzhou Home is also recruiting people for a position paying 10,000 yuan a month and offers 7,000 yuan a month to top level nannies, the report said.
However, only a few graduates are qualified for the job, said Cong Shan, vice manager of Guangzhou Home EZ Service Co Ltd.
Only 300 graduates passed the interview and about 200 students quit after only one week, mostly due to their poor attitude towards the job, Cong told the newspaper. Cong added some were unhappy that they couldn't have dinner with their boss.
As demand decreases for domestic helpers after the Spring Festival, the Guangdong Domestic Service Association said salaries will drop somewhat.
The global financial crisis has cooled the hopes of many of the 6.1 million college-educated job hunters expected to graduate this year. Employment prospects are bleak at foreign-owned companies and financial institutions, which are experiencing shrinking demand and capital shortages.
