Edible oil firm apologizes after cover-up fails
THE cooking oil manufacturer in central China's Hunan Province first attempting to cover up its recall of tainted products now has promised full compensation to customers.
Liu Xianghao, chairman of the Jinhao Camellia Oil Co Ltd in Hunan's Qiyang County, apologized to the public in a letter released on Monday over its tainted cooking oil and the cover-up of the products recall. Liu took the blame personally in the letter.
The firm has admitted that 42 tons of its camellia seed cooking oil made between last December and March was tainted with Benzo (a) Pyrene (BaP), a cancer-causing substance. It was a sharp about-face as the firm vehemently denied the BaP contamination only two weeks ago.
The company said it knew about the problem this March as local quality inspectors seized 22.4 tons in its warehouse. Jinhao secretly recalled the oil from the market but never issued any public warning to customers.
The local government knew all about the recall but kept quiet about it, reported Century Weekly magazine earlier. Local food safety authorities have found BaP in Jinhao's cooking oil six times higher than the accepted level.
