Eight die after highway horror

EIGHT people died and seven were injured, two seriously, in an expressway accident in Yujiang County, eastern China's Jiangxi Province, early yesterday, local authorities said.

At 4:20am a bus ran into another bus that had overturned on the expressway, which links Shanghai with Kunming, the capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, said Yao Shaowu, an officer of the Jiangxi provincial traffic police.

Six people were killed instantly and two others died despite emergency surgery, Yao said.

Currently, seven others were being treated at three local hospitals, and two were in serious condition, according to Yao.

"It was raining and the road was slippery when the accident happened," he said.

The overturned bus was registered in central China's Hubei Province while the other bus was registered in southwest China's Guizhou Province.

They were both heading toward the Jiangxi provincial capital of Nanchang.

It is not known how many people were traveling on the buses.
