Ex-uni official jailed for life over bribes

A FORMER top official of a university in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has been jailed for life for taking 1.14 million yuan (US$166,959.84) in bribes over a large building project.

Guangxi Higher People's Court handed down its verdict on Zhao Yonghua, former vice principal of Guilin University of Electronic Technology - one of the region's top five universities, today's Nanguo Morning Post reported.

The case involved another seven officials and led to police solving 24 bribery cases, according to the newspaper.

Zhao, 46, had been chief of the university's new Yaoshan campus project headquarters since 2004. The campus, developed in three stages, is valued at 1.2 billion yuan.

During his tenure, he took 400,000 yuan from a design company to help it win jobs valued at 10 million yuan for the campus's first phase.

He also took 390,000 yuan from a company manager surnamed Jiang to help his company win construction deals worth 30 million yuan.

That's not to mention the money he took from bosses of a further 10 companies to grease the wheels, the court said.

However, Zhao refused to reveal where he'd hidden the money during interrogation, claiming he'd given some to friends, or that it was stolen.
