Family members beaten after infant boy's death
THE family of a six-month-old baby said they were beaten up by nurses and hospital security guards pretending to be policemen in Fujian Province after they demanded to know why their son died.
They also saw the body of the infant, who was treated for diarrhea, being thrown into the trunk of a car by men described as "thugs" by family members.
They said Hushi Hospital, where the baby was treated, in Putian City organized the "thugs" to take away the body to cover up a medical accident, Hunan-based Voc.com.cn reported yesterday.
The baby was taken to hospital about 8am on January 8, the report said.
While being given an intravenous drip, he began to have trouble breathing and his body turned purple, the report said. Doctor Hu Yinxi tried to save the boy but failed. The baby died about 10am, Zeng Hong, the baby's aunt, told the website.
"They must have used the wrong medicine," Zeng was quoted as saying.
Zeng Jinhai, the boy's father, told the website: "My son is gone even before he could call me dad."
He was furious when the hospital claimed the death was from natural causes. He wouldn't allow Dr Hu to leave and punch him, the report said.
"The death of the boy was a huge blow for us. We were very emotional," Zeng Hong said.
Lin Changkang, vice director of the district health bureau, was sent to mediate, but no conclusion was reached, the report said.
On January 11, dozens of people dressed in blue uniforms took the body away, the report said. "We could do nothing but watch them throw the body into a trunk of a car," the aunt was quoted as saying.
The family went to the hospital on January 17, and at the entrance held up a banner reading: "Give back my boy. Demand justice."
Several family members were injured when they were attacked by people with iron bars.
At first, Zeng's family thought they were policemen, the report said. However, they found some assailants were hospital workers.
