Family of 5 dies after New Year's Eve dinner
POLICE in northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region are investigating the death of a five-member family on January 25 - Chinese New Year's Eve.
All the members of the family in a village in Inner Mongolia's Chifeng City died within three hours of each other.
Witness said the family members displayed symptoms such as vomiting and loss of consciousness before they died, the Oriental Morning Post reported yesterday.
A strong odor of pesticide could be smelt coming from the dumplings they had eaten, according to friends and relatives of the family.
The pork or flour used in the dumplings might have been contaminated by pesticide, police said.
All the food the family ate has been removed for tests. Two bottles of pesticide were found in the kitchen. One had fallen over spilling its contents. Murder has not yet been ruled out, said a detective working on the case.
The five victims have been identified as Wang Haijiang, 52, his wife Tang Guiqin, 49, his son Wang Chen, 25, Wang Chen's wife Zhao Yonghong, 23, and Wang Chen's three-year-old son, Wang Yanming.
Liu Jie, a relative to the family, told the newspaper he heard intermittent shouting at about 11:30pm and saw Wang Haijiang leaning against some railings about 50 meters away from his home.
Liu took him home, but found Wang Chen, Zhao and Wang Yanming were unconscious and foaming at the mouth. A doctor was called who administered anti-toxin drugs to all five, but all of them died within two hours.
