Five detained over attack on police chief

POLICE in southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have detained five men who allegedly attacked a local police chief, China News Service reported today.

Another suspect is still at large, the report said, citing police spokesperson Peng Xiangsong.

Liang Hongqing, vice director of Wuming County Public Security Bureau in Guangxi's capital Nanning City, was attacked when he was about to drive home at midnight on November 1, according to Peng.

Two men followed Liang and stabbed him nine times with kitchen knives.

Liang is in stable condition and recovering.

Before the attack, fire broke out at Liang's home and he had received an anonymous call from a man who threatened to kill all his family, according to Peng.

Police investigation showed Qin, a local government worker, allegedly decided to take revenge against Liang after his brother was detained in August for involvement in a criminal case.

Qin allegedly paid 20,000 yuan (US$2,929) to hire two people to carry out the attack and asked them to kill Liang, the report said.
