Food-safety flaws targeted as China's legislative body to review new draft law

CHINA'S legislative body is to review the latest draft of the Food Safety Law, as the government plans to step up its effort to tackle rampant food-safety issues.

The new version of the Food Safety Law, the first amendment since the current version was unveiled in 2009, will see major changes such as the ban of contract manufacturers from producing infant formula on other brands' behalf.

The China Food and Drug Administration published a draft version of the latest amendment in late October 2013 for public comment.

The draft also stipulates that infant formula producers should have strict quality control from the import of raw material and the delivery process after the completion of manufacturing. They should also carry out spot checks on the final products.

Infant formula producers shall also file the recipes, raw material and labels to provincial- and city-level food and drug administrative authorities.

CFDA and other agencies are expected to issue a number of new regulations once the new law is enacted, including new basic standards for food manufacturing and distribution.

Last week, the CFDA granted production permits to 82 companies out of 133 that had applied, after local administrative offices started carrying out inspections of product- safety controls, manufacturing processes and product traceability since last December.
