Foreign minister hopes India has learned lessons

CHINA hopes India will learn lessons following the end of a months-long military stand-off in a Himalayan plateau where the two countries meet, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said yesterday.

The two nations resolved the deadlock over the Dong Lang area just days before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is due to attend a BRICS summit in southeast China.

“Of course, we hope the Indian side will learn lessons from this incident and prevent similar things from happening again,” Wang told a news briefing on the upcoming summit.

On Monday, China said India had withdrawn “all its border personnel and equipment that were illegally on the Chinese territory.”

The stand-off that began on June 16 had sparked what some analysts said was the worst crisis in decades between the neighbors.

Wang said “it’s only natural” for two major countries to have “some problems in our interactions.”

“What’s important is that we put these problems in the appropriate place, and appropriately handle and control them in the spirit of mutual respect and based on the consensus of both countries’ leaders,” he added.

Potential for cooperation

“We hope that China and India will join hands and work together for the rejuvenation of Asia,” he said. “On the border face-off caused by India’s trespassing, that has been settled. There is huge potential for cooperation between China and India,” he said.

Wang did not say whether Chinese President Xi Jinping and Modi would hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Xiamen.

“The first thing is whether the leaders have the willingness to meet,” Wang said. “If there’s a willingness from the leaders participating, the Chinese side will try to make it possible if our schedule permits.”

Wang said China wants to build stronger partnerships within and beyond the five BRICS countries during the upcoming summit.

Wang said China expects outcomes in several areas, including strengthening economic and security cooperation, increasing cultural and people-to-people exchanges, enhancing institutional building, as well as promoting stronger partnerships with other emerging-market countries and developing countries.

China will hold the BRICS Business Forum — the largest so far, Wang said — on Sunday and Monday.

President Xi will attend the opening ceremony and deliver a speech reviewing the progress BRICS countries have made in the past 10 years and looking to the future.

The BRICS Xiamen Summit opens on Monday.

Xi will chair a small meeting of BRICS leaders, discussing world economy, global governance, international and regional hotspot issues, and national security and development. A larger meeting will focus on deepening cooperation, promoting cultural and people-to-people exchanges, as well as enhancing institutional building.

The BRICS leaders will also attend the opening ceremony of the BRICS Cultural Festival and Photo Exhibition, a meeting of the BRICS Business Council and a signing ceremony, which will be followed by a welcome banquet hosted by Xi and first lady Peng Liyuan.

Entering a new stage

The BRICS mechanism has entered a new stage featuring economic, political and security cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges, Wang said, adding that there will be an increase in cultural activities involving BRICS countries this year as China holds the BRICS chairmanship.

China held the 2017 BRICS Games in the southern city of Guangzhou in June, marking the first comprehensive multilateral sports and cultural exchanges under the framework of BRICS cooperation.

China has also held a media forum, film festival, traditional medicine meeting and young diplomats forum.

“The leaders of the BRICS countries will continue to accumulate consensus on strengthening people-to-people exchanges during the upcoming BRICS Xiamen Summit,” Wang said.

Xi will chair the Dialogue of Emerging Markets and Developing Countries next Tuesday, to be attended by the leaders of the BRICS countries, as well as the leaders of Egypt, Mexico, Tajikistan, Guinea and Thailand.

The dialogue will focus on deepening cooperation and promoting common development.

“China stands ready to work with other BRICS countries to make BRICS cooperation bigger, stronger and more solid to benefit not only the five BRICS countries, but also the whole world,” Wang said.
