Forests hailed as saviors

THE nation has afforested land of more than 1 million mu (66,000 hectares) with money from the China Green Carbon Fund, a forest administration official said in Beijing yesterday.

The fund was established in July 2007 by the State Forestry Administration and the China Green Foundation as a countermeasure to address climate change.

Li Nuyun, deputy director of the Afforestation Department of SFA, said: "One way to tackle climate change is to reduce emission of greenhouse gases, and the other is to increase forestry coverage, sometimes the latter is more effective."

Forests absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.

Carbon credits

Through donating money to the fund, companies and individuals could erase their carbon footprints and deposit carbon credits.

Li said China National Petroleum Corporation was the largest donator, with 300 million yuan (US$43.9 million).

"There are more than 1,000 citizens who have donated money to the fund," Li said.

"In Beijing, every 1,000 yuan they donate for planting trees could help absorb 5.6 to 8.6 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent."

Li was addressing the Fifth China International Forum on Environment and Development, co-hosted by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the United Nations Environment Program and organized by the All China Environment Federation.

The forum creates a platform for international organizations, Chinese government agencies, the private sector and NGOs to discuss issues related to environmental protection.
