Four tourists killed in US bus tour tragedy from Shanghai
THE identities of the six Chinese tourists who died in a bus crash in the United States on Friday were confirmed yesterday.
Zhu Guoying, Sun Mengqiu, Zhu Yongshun and Sheng Zhenquan were from Shanghai. The other two victims were 16-year-old Hong Kong girl Chung Yu-ching and Ge Xiazhen from Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province.
Chen Wenting, a 46-year-old Chinese American, who was the tour guide, also died in the crash, said the Shanghai Tourism Administration, which received a victim list from the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles.
Eight injured, including a tourist from Hong Kong and the bus driver, are still in hospital.
Two of the dead were related - 40-year-old Zhu Yongshun and his uncle-in-law, 57-year-old Sheng Zhenquan. Zhu's wife Zhao Yinglei and his father-in-law Zhao Shunxing are in hospital in a "relatively stable" condition.
Hu Yacong, Zhu's mother-in-law, was not on the US trip because of poor health.
"She was not strong enough, so she didn't go the US but stayed with her five-year-old grandson at home," said a relative. "She collapsed on hearing the bad news."
Property management officials with the Jinyang Mansion in Putuo District, where Zhu's family lived, said the family were well liked.
"Zhu operated an earthworks company, and his wife was a middle school teacher," Yan Wenli said. "Not like some rich people, they were easy to approach."
The victims were with a 20-member tour group that flew from Shanghai to San Francisco on January 24.
The bus was on its way to the Grand Canyon, an optional trip not included in the package price, when the accident happened. Five members of the group chose not to participate in the trip.
Shanghai has set up a task force headed by Vice Mayor Zhao Wen to handle the aftermath.
Members of the victims' families, local government and travel agencies, a lawyer and a doctor are expected to leave for the US tomorrow, said Cheng Meihong, deputy director of the tourism administration.
"The passports will be issued on Tuesday and the airline has reserved seats for them," Cheng told Xinhua news agency.
They will include Hong Kong man Chung Yinghan who lives in Shanghai. His wife Lau Yeekwan was injured and his 16-year-old daughter Chung Yu-ching killed.
"I am very sad to lose my dear daughter. I hope to arrive in the US as soon as possible to see my wife," he said.
The accident occurred at 3:04pm on Friday about 43.5 kilometers south of the Hoover Dam.
The 2007 Cherolet Starcraft coach overturned and landed on its right side on a four-lane highway. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
Wu Shougui said he grabbed on to his armrest when the vehicle overturned and escaped through a window. He only suffered scratches to his face. His eight-year-old son is being treated at the Nevada University Medical Center.
The package tour to the US was organized by the Shanghai Donghu International Travel Service.
